KEITH HAYWARD & ROSS JEFFREE TOOK A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO BLUES.

THE GREAT THING FOR ME SINCE I STARTED THIS BLOG, IS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE FROM THE PAST I HAVE HEARD FROM. KEITH HAYWARD, THE BASS PLAYER WITH FRED KARNIS ARMY CONTACTED ME LAST WEEK, NOT HAVING PLAYED SINCE 1970, TO PERSUE HIS STUDIES AT UNI, KEITH BECAME A SCIENTIST AND LAB MANAGER, AND IS NOW IN SEMI RETIREMENT. SCIENCE WAS A REAL POPULAR CHOICE FOR FKA MEMBERS, WITH GUITARIST DR. ROSS JEFFREE, (ALSO X FLAKE) NOW LABORATORY HEAD OF THE RADIO-ECOLOGY LABORATORY AT THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY IN MONACO. ROSS' AREA OF INTEREST BEING ECOTOXICOLOGY.
THE PHOTO OF ROSS IS FROM HIS DAYS AT ANSTO.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH NORTH DAKOTA?

I SEE WHY PHIL JONES HASN'T BOTHERED WITH NORTH DAKOTA. THE COMPETITION IS TOO TOUGH! I NOTE ON 4TH JULY, YOU CAN ENJOY THE" CAPITAL CITY CLOGGERS" WITH THE "BISMARCK- MANDEN ELKS MEN'S CHORUS".

UBU.COM IS A WEB SITE DEDICATED TO AVANT GARDE FILM

UBU.COM IS A WONDERFUL SITE PROVIDING ACCESS TO DOZENS OF FREE DOWNLOADABLE AVANT-GARDE MOVIES. MANY OF THE MOVIE MAKERS I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH, HOWEVER, THERE ARE NUMEROUS YOKO ONO FILMS SOME CO-PRODUCED WITH JOHN LENNON, BUT MY FAVOURITE IS ONE BY JOHN CAGE, FEATURING ROLAND KIRK. IF YOU ARE A FAN, YOU WILL LOVE IT, IF YOU LOVE JAZZ, YOU WILL LOVE IT. FEATURES SCENES AT RONNIE SCOTT'S IN LONDON, KIRK PLAYING TO ANIMALS AT LONDON ZOO. FILMED IN 1966, THIS IS A CLASSIC PIECE. DOWNLOAD THIS REALLY COOL BEATNIK FILUM, AND GROOVE MAN!

John Coltrane Quintet with Eric Dolphy - Impressions

ALONG WITH ROLAND KIRK, HERE ARE MY OTHER FAVOURITE SAX PLAYERS, JOHN COLTRANE AND ERIC DOLPHY.
THE MIND BLOWING DRUMMER, IF YOU DON'T KNOW IS ELVIN JONES.

PHIL JONES...WHERE IS HE NOW?

I HAVE BE COMMUNICATING WITH PHIL ON A REGULAR BASIS LATELY, USUALLY GOING ON ABOUT THE OLD DAYS AND WHERE WE BOTH GREW UP.
THIS IS PHIL'S ACCOUNT OF WHAT HE AND HIS WIFE JENNIFER, ARE DOING.

"DURING THE PAST ELEVEN YEARS SINCE MY RETURN TO THE USA, WITH MY AMERICAN WIFE, JENNIFER MY LIFE HAS EVOLVED INTO A PERPETUAL TOUR ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE LIVE FULL TIME IN A 37 FOOT MOTOR HOME WITH OUR DOG, AND TRAVEL FROM COAST TO COAST GIVING LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS ON THE HEALING AND INTUITIVE ASPECTS OF THE DIDGERIDOO. LIVING AND TRAVELLING IN A MOTOR HOME IS VERY DIFFERENT TO ANYTHING I HAVE EXPERIENCED BEFORE. IN THE PAST, WHEN I WOULD TOUR WITH A BAND, IT WOULD LAST A FEW WEEKS AND THEN I WOULD BE HOME. BUT NOW 'HOME' IS WHEREVER WE PARK THE RV.
THIS LIFESTYLE BEGAN IN 1995, WHEN I WAS A GUEST SPEAKER AT A DEEPAK CHOPRA SEMINAR IN SAN DIEGO. MY TALK WAS WELL RECEIVED AND THE VISITING SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS INVITED ME TO SPEAK IN THEIR RESPECTIVE HOME TOWNS. SO, MY WORK IS CONTINUALLY BEING NETWORKED AS WE TRAVEL. WE'RE USUALLY BOOKED 6 MONTHS IN ADVANCE TO APPEAR AT UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES, CHURCHES, HEALING CLINICS AND YOGA CENTRES.
LIKE OTHER'SNOWBIRDS' IN THE STATES, WE TRAVEL SOUTH DURING THE COLD WINTER MONTHS, TO AVOID DRIVING IN SNOW AND ICE, AND THEN HEAD NORTH DURING THE WARMER MONTHS. EXCEPT FOR ALASKA, HAWAII AND NORH DAKOTA, WE HAVE BROUGHT A 'PIECE' OF AUSTRALIA TO VIRTUALLY ALL OF MAINLAND AMERICA.
I PRESENT AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP WHERE EACH PARTICIPANT IS PROVIDED AND AUTHENTIC AUSTRALIAN DIDGERIDOO TO USE FOR MEDITATION AND BREATHING EXERCISES. THE THEME OF USING THE DIDGERIDOO IS TO CLEAR AND CALM THE MIND IN ORDER TO ATTAIN MENTAL CLARITY AND EMOTIONAL EQUANIMITY. IT APPEALS TO MANY PEOPLE BECAUSE THE DIDGERIDOO IS A NON-DENOMINATIONAL MEDITATION ACCELERATOR THAT IS HARMONIOUSLY ALIGNED WITH EASTERN PHILOSOPHY, WESTERN PHILOSOPHY AND ABORIGINAL TRADITIONS.
IN A STRANGE TWIST OF FATE, I'VE SOMEHOW COME FULL CIRCLE WITH THIS WORK AND MY MUSIC. AS A YOUNG AUSTRALIAN BOY DURING THE EARLY 1960'S, I WOULS STUDY AND IMMERSE MYSELF IN THE MUSIC AND CULTURE OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA BLUES, AND NOW AS AN ADULT, I REGULARLY VISIT THE DEEP SOUTH, THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE BLUES, SHARING THE MUSIC AND TRADITIONAL CULTURE OF AUSTRALIA."

(I WONDER WHAT'S WRONG WITH NORTH DAKOTA?)

AND ANOTHER BIT MORE ABOUT BRUCE BONGERS, FRED KARNISS AND ME

I REMEMBER ONE NIGHT, WE PLAYED AT THE HURSTVILLE CIVIC CENTRE. SOME JERK WITH A CLIPBOARD WAS RUNNING THE DANCE, WE CAN'T REMEMBER WHO HE WAS, (BUT BRUCE TOLD ME LAST NIGHT HE WENT ON TO BE A TV PRODUCER AND COMPOSER ), OBVIOUSLY OF NO NOTE AND LITTLE TALENT, BUT I DIGRESS, WE PLAYED A 20 MIN VERSION OF THE WORK SONG, AND HE THREW US OFF! HE TOLD US THAT TUNES SHOULD ONLY BE ABOUT 4 MINUTES LONG. THE AUDIENCE ENJOYED IT. WE PISSED OURSELVES LAUGHING. THE CLIPBOARD MAN ALSO DIRECTED THE BOUNCER TO POUR THE CONTENTS OF BRUCE'S FLASK DOWN THE TOILET.
HERE ARE A COUPLE OF PICS OF BRUCE WITH BUDDY GUY AND JUNIOR WELLS. BRUCE IS THE ONE WITH THE LONG HAIR.

THE PHIL JONES STORY PART 2

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY HAVE MISSED YESTERDAY'S PART 1, READ IT FIRST.
THE STORY CONTINUES.....
WE HAD RESEARCHED BLUES MUSIC AND MADE CONTACT WITH SUN STUDIOS IN MEMPHIS AND STAX RECORDS. WE SENT THEM A LETTER WITH A MONEY ORDER, TELLING THEM WE WERE AUSSIE SCHOOL KIDS WITH A FACINATION FOR BLUES. THEY SENT US A TREASURE TROVE OF FANTASTIC BLUES 45'S THAT WOULD BE WORTH A FORTUNE NOW. ARTISTS LIKE SONNY TERRY AND BROWNIE MCGEE, JOHN LEE HOOKER, HOWLIN' WOLF, LOUISIANA RED, BOOKER T AND THE MG'S, ROBERT JOHNSON, JOSH WHITE, LEAD BELLY AND MANY MORE.
NOW, CONSIDER MIDDLE CLASS SUBURBIA, (IE EARLWOOD) CIRCA 1965! THE INITIAL RESPONSE WAS "THIS IS REALLY WEIRD". THERE WERE A LOT OF BEMUSED AND CONFUSED LOOKS, BUT AFTER A WHILE, THE TIDE TURNED AND WE GAINED A LOYAL FOLLOWING."

THIS IS A BIT MORE ABOUT BRUCE BONGERS

I PLAYED WITH BRUCE IN FRED KARNISS ARMY, 68-69? ALONG WITH DENISE CAINES , ROSS JEFFREE (FLAKE) AND KEITH HERBERT(SYN) AND KEITH HAYWARD. AS I HAVE MENTIONED IN PREVIOUS POSTS, BRUCE IS A MASTER HARP PLAYER, AND SINGS, AND THESE DAYS, ALSO PLAYS SAX. HIS BAND THESE DAYS IS "DOWNHOME QUARTET" WITH PETER DOYLE. CHECK OUT THEIR WEB SITE AT http://www.downhome.cjb.net/.

PHIL JONES RECALLS HIS EARLY DAYS WITH THE UNKNOWN BLUES www.philjonesmusic.com

PHIL WITH JIMMY PAGE IN SYDNEY

I ASKED PHIL FOR HIS MEMORIES FROM THE DAYS AROUND THE FORMATION OF THE "UNKNOWN BLUES "
PHIL HAD THIS TO SAY. "I WAS HOT TO BE IN A BAND AT ABOUT AGE 15. THE PROBLEM WAS, NO ONE LIKED MY VOICE. THE GUYS AT DE LA SALLE IN MARRICKVILLE , WHO HAD A BAND CALLED THE ROGUES THOUGHT MY VOICE WAS TOO LOW AND NOT HIGH ENOUGH FOR THE TUNES THEY WERE DOING. SO THEY SENT ME OVER TO CHRIS BROWN'S HOUSE TO TRY OUT WITH HIS BAND. CHRIS WAS A NEIGHBOR OF MINE IN EARLWOOD AND WAS ONE COOL GUY, STILL IS.....HIS DAD WAS A PROFESSOR OF OSTEOPATHY AND A FOURTH DAN BLACK BELT IN JU JITSU. I DECIDED I HAD TO BE IN THIS BAND BECAUSE CHRIS HAD A GREAT RICKENBACKER GUITAR. I BEGAN AUDITIONING WITH THEM, DOING A FEW POP TUNES OF THE DAY, AND I COULD SEE THEY WEREN'T TOO IMPRESSED WITH MY INABILITY TO SING IN THOSE ULTRA-HIGH KEYS. JUST AS THEY WERE ABOUT TO GIVE ME THE FLICK, CHRIS' DAD WALKED IN AND SAID "YOU BETTER KEEP THIS GUY, HE'S GOT A GOOD VOICE!" SO I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THAT CHRIS' DAD WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR IN MY BEING PART OF SUCH AN INNOVATIVE BAND.
DAVE ROWLANDS WAS A GREAT DRUMMER, HE HAD A CLEAN AND DRIVING R&B STYLE.
BILL HODGKISSON PLAYED A GREAT AND POWERFUL BASS- LOCKING IN NICELY WITH DAVE'S. CHRIS BROWN WAS OUR FEARLESS LEADER AND A GREAT INNOVATIVE AND ORIGINAL LEAD GUITARIST. ANDREW BLUNDELL WAS OUR FIRST KEYBOARD PLAYER ON "IF I HAD A TICKET", LATER FOLLOWED BY VAUGHN BROS ON "PICK A BALE OF COTTON"
THE UNKNOWN BLUES WAS DEFINITELY A GARAGE BAND.... A BUNCH OF SCHOOL KIDS TRYING TO MAKE SOME COOL AND DIFFERENT MUSIC.

TO BE CONTINUED..........

CORPORATE CRIMINALS

IT'S STRANGE; SOMETIMES YOU HEAR OR SEE SOMETHING UNUSUAL, AND THEN SEE OR HEAR THE SAME THING IN A DIFFERENT CONTEXT SOON AFTER . I REDISCOVERED THE CALL'S "WHEN THE WALLS CAME DOWN" WHICH CONTAINS THE WORDS "CORPORATE CRIMINALS", WHO'S VIDEO I POSTED HERE A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, THEN AT THE SAME TIME, PHIL JONES, MAKES CONTACT, ADVISING US OF HIS NEW ALBUM, COSMIC SURFER, AND THE WORDS IN THE FIRST SONG I LISTEN TO ,HAVE THE WORDS, " CORPORATE CRIMINALS".

I GOT A NEW DRUM MACHINE!

FROM PREVIOUS POSTS, YOU MAY HAVE PICKED UP ON THE FACT THAT I THINK DRUMMERS ARE PROBABLY A WASTE OF STAGE SPACE WITH TODAY'S NEW TECHNOLOGY. I AM ASSURED, THAT EVEN THOUGH THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIER MODELS, DRUM MACHINES ARE THE WAY TO GO. I HAVE LISTENED TO "the HEAD", AND ROB ASKEW'S BAND, AND THEY DON'T HAVE DRUMMERS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS, THIS ONE TAKES UP ABOUT THE SAME SPACE AS A DRUM KIT. IT LOOKS VERY NICE IN THE BEDROOM STUDIO, AND MARGARET WAS HAPPY TO MOVE TO THE SPARE BEDROOM, TO AVOID STEAM BURNS.

I'D LIKE TO WRITE SOME MUSIC, BUT HOW DOES THIS THING WORK?

AS A RECOVERING TECHNOPHOBE, IE, I STILL HAVE NIGHTMARES ABOUT DOS, I AM A MUSICIAN WHO HAS HAPPILY CIRCUMVENTED THE ENTIRE LAST QUARTER CENTURY, WHEN IT COMES TO MUSIC TECHNOLOGY. I WASN'T HERE. NOW THAT I HAVE RETURNED, I AM TRYING TO COME TO TERMS WITH ALL THIS STUFF I HAVE PURCHASED ON EBAY, SOME WITHOUT ANY INSTRUCTIONS. THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE BORN WHEN SAMPLERS, SYNTHS & SEQUENCERS WERE A PART OF THE LANGUAGE, WOULD HAVE NO APPRECIATION FOR THE PROBLEMS OF THE AGED, TECHNICALLY ILLITERATE MUSICIAN, AND WHAT THEY MUST FACE. I HAVE AN ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING BACKGROUND, BUT WHEN I MOVED INTO MANAGEMENT 20 YEARS AGO, ANY REAL UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT TECHNOLOGY WENT DOWN THE TOILET. ALL I WANT TO KNOW, IS, HOW DOES THIS BLOODY THING WORK? I THINK I HAVE BEEN DUDDED ON EBAY AGAIN!

DRUMMERS GETTING UNDUE ATTENTION

OR ARE THEY? I WORK WITH A YOUNG GUY, YES YOU GUESSED IT, ANOTHER DRUMMER . I WAS TALKING TO HIM ABOUT HIS KIT. (WHAT ELSE?) HE WAS TELLING ME HE PAID 1500 FOR THE KIT, AND PROBABLY ANOTHER 2000 FOR CYMBALS. I DON'T KNOW WHY, THEY ALL PRETTY MUCH SOUND THE SAME, DON'T THEY? WHICH REMINDS ME ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BAND I EVER PLAYED IN, WHILE STILL AT SCHOOL. THE DRUMMER WAS FRED LAPPIN, HE WAS THE DRUMMER BECAUSE HE WAS THE ONLY BLOKE I KNEW WITH A DRUM KIT. HE WAS A GOOD BLOKE, A MAD STONES FAN; ALL HE COULD PLAY TO WAS "GET OFF MY CLOUD", SO IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO PLAY, IT ALL ENDED UP SOUNDING LIKE GET OFF MY CLOUD.

WHO WRITES THIS STUFF, BERNARD ZUEL?

I READ IN THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD , METRO SECTION TODAY,
"ANCIENT KIWI DRUMMER AND SONGWRITER MAX MERRITT AND HIS BAND THE METEORS WILL BE SLIPPING AWAY AT PENRITH RSL ON JUNE 11," . NOW, EVEN BLOODY MAX MERRITT IS A DRUMMER!!!
ALSO, ON THE SAME PAGE, CONCERNING MY DECEASED NAMESAKE, DAVE ALLEN THE IRISH COMEDIAN, THEY ALMOST MADE AMENDS WITH THE FOLLOWING; DAVE WAS IN THE AUDIENCE AT THE EDINBURGH FRINGE. A TRENDY YOUNG COMEDIAN WAS GETTING NOWHERE AND RESORTED TO TALKING TO THE AUDIENCE IN A "AND WHAT'S YOUR NAME" WAY. HE DIDN'T RECOGNISE ALLEN, SO HE SAID, "AND WHAT'S YOUR NAME SIR?" IN A PATRONISING VOICE. ALLEN REPLIED:
"DAVE ALLEN". THE AUDIENCE SUCKED IN A COLLECTIVE BREATH. THE CLUELESS COMEDIAN SAID, "AND WHAT DO YOU DO SIR?" ALLEN SAID; "I'M A COMEDIAN. WHAT DO YOU DO?"
