CHRISTMAS SYMBOLISM

IT'S FUNNY, WE ALL LOVE CHRISTMAS, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH RELIGION. MY WIFE AND I WORK AT THE SAME COMPANY, FRIENDS OF OURS AT WORK, ARE MUSLIM FROM AFGHANISTAN. THEY HAVE JUST HAD A BABY. THEY ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE ANYONE COULD EVER MEET. THEY PUT UP A TREE AND DECORATIONS IN THEIR HOME. THEY LOVE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS. I'M AN AGNOSTIC OR ATHEIST OR WHATEVER, I LOVE CHRISTMAS, AND IT'S MEANING TO ME.

I REALIZE IN OUR FAMILY THAT THE TREE AND DECORATIONS ARE SYMBOLIC. THEY ARE TOTEMS REPRESENTING OUR PAST AND CONNECTIONS TO OUR PAST. THIS YEAR I PUT A SMALL TRAIN SET AROUND THE TREE. I REALIZED AFTER I DID IT, THAT IT WAS MY TOTEM, AN HONOUR TO MY PARENTS.

MY FATHER IS 85 TODAY, HE BOUGHT TWO TRAIN SETS IN ABOUT 1954, I, WE, STILL HAVE THESE TOY TRAINS. THEY ARE NOT JUST TOY TRAINS. THEY REPRESENT A FAMILY LINK, A HISTORY, A TOTEM. BY MY PUTTING THESE TOY TRAINS AROUND OUR TREE IT IS MY GIFT OF HONOUR TO MY PARENTS.
